Outing in Bengaluru

A city of rain, trees, conversations, and unexpected adventures. Sometimes the best way to experience Bengaluru is simply to follow your curiosity.

Outing in Bengaluru

Bangalore is a city that slowly grows on you.

Perched on the Deccan Plateau, the city enjoys a pleasant climate for most of the year. Coupled with its reputation as the Silicon Valley of India, Bangalore is home to people from every corner of the country—students, professionals, entrepreneurs, artists, and travelers alike.

It is this blend of cultures that has given rise to a vibrant city life that comfortably balances tradition with modernity. Whether it is cafes, bookstores, bustling marketplaces, shopping malls, lakes, or trekking trails, there is always something to explore. Once known as the “City of Lakes,” Bangalore still boasts many beautiful water bodies that offer welcome pockets of calm amid the urban bustle. Adding to its charm is its proximity to the Western Ghats, making weekend escapes into nature surprisingly accessible.

Having spent over four years around Yeshwantpur in IISc, I’ve realized that deciding where to go is usually not so much about finding places but more about answering three simple questions:

* What is your mood?
* How much time do you have?
* Who are you going with?

Once you know the answers to these, Bangalore almost plans itself.

For a relaxed evening:

Some days, after completing assignments, performing lab experiments, or just making it through an exhausting week, all you need is a quiet walk and good food. For that, Malleswaram is perhaps the most convenient destination. Its tree-lined streets, old temples, local markets, and the peaceful Sankey Tank create an atmosphere that feels distinctly different from the rest of the city. The area is filled with restaurants serving everything from traditional South Indian breakfast to oven-baked treats to go with your tea, making it perfect for an unplanned evening out. It is also a convenient place for shopping, tailoring, bookstores, and everyday services.

For a similar outing on a tighter budget, Yeshwantpur Market serves as a lively alternative. Nearby, Orion Mall is a reliable option for catching a movie, grabbing dinner, or simply spending a relaxed evening with friends.

When you have half a day to spare:

A little more time opens up much of central Bangalore.

You could spend a peaceful morning around Ulsoor Lake, admire the architecture of St. Mary’s Basilica, or walk through the gardens of Cubbon Park before visiting the iconic Vidhana Soudha. Those who enjoy books, cafes, music, and a livelier atmosphere will likely find themselves on Church Street (easily accessible from the Mahatma Gandhi metro station), which remains one of Bangalore’s most popular hangout spots.

For shopping enthusiasts, Commercial Street, Chickpete, Lulu Mall (the largest mall of Bengaluru), and several local markets cater to every budget, from affordable bargains to premium brands. If greenery is more your preference, Lalbagh Botanical Garden offers one of the city’s most peaceful escapes, especially during its famous annual flower show.

Sports enthusiasts may also enjoy watching matches held at M. Chinnaswamy Stadium or Kanteerava Stadium, provided tickets are available during the respective sporting seasons.

Weekend adventures:

If there is one experience every IISc student should try at least once, it is an early-morning trek.

Bangalore’s greatest advantage is perhaps its proximity to numerous hills and trekking trails. While Nandi Hills can be enjoyed without much hiking, destinations such as Skandagiri, Savandurga, Makalidurga, and Shivagange Betta offer rewarding climbs and spectacular sunrise views.

Most sunrise treks begin before dawn, often around 4:30 a.m., so a little preparation goes a long way. Carry sufficient water, some snacks, and comfortable trekking shoes, and always check entry timings or booking requirements beforehand, as several popular trails now require online reservations.

The effort is almost always rewarded by the cool mountain air, panoramic views, and memories that last much longer than those from another weekend spent indoors. Sometimes you do get fogged out :)

If that was not enough, Bangalore has far more to offer than the places mentioned above.

Go-karting, museums, escape rooms, live music venues, board-game cafes, cycling groups, stand-up comedy shows, microbreweries, and countless hidden cafes are scattered across neighbourhoods such as Indiranagar, Koramangala, JP Nagar, and many others. Exploring these places usually requires a little planning—both in terms of budget and travel time—but discovering them is part of the fun!

Google Maps will get you almost anywhere, while YouTube and travel blogs often provide useful suggestions before you head out.

Life at IISc can become intensely academic. Between coursework, research, deadlines, and exams, it is surprisingly easy to spend weeks without stepping outside campus.

Don’t let that happen too often.

Bangalore has a way of rewarding curiosity. Some of your best memories may not come from planned tourist attractions, but from an unexpected cafe after an exam, a spontaneous evening walk around Sankey Tank, or watching the sunrise from a hill with friends after an overnight trek.

So whenever time permits, step outside the campus gates. Explore a little. Try something new. The assignments will still be waiting when you return—but the memories you make outside the classroom often stay with you much longer.
