About Ensemble

Greetings, Ensemble! Welcome to the society of curious Physics enthusiasts (nerds?) taking baby steps in understanding the physical laws of our beautiful universe. Physics is now a remarkably diverse field, spanning everything from atoms and multi-body systems to superconductors, photonic circuits, biological membranes, and black holes. Ensemble, the IISc UG Physics club, was formed in the early days of the BS Program by highly enthusiastic and passionate Physics aficionados as a meeting spot for fresh minds to discuss the emerging frontiers of Physics.

As it reached the year 2019-20, club activities primarily consisted of lectures introducing advanced topics such as General Relativity and Quantum Field Theory in a lucid, easy-to-understand way. Graduate students and post-doctoral students were invited to deliver such lectures. Lectures were not only delivered on so-called ‘advanced’ topics, but also on topics like error measurement, essential for a Physics student to know. Since then, Ensemble has conducted multiple talks annually, some delivered by alums, many others by professors and visiting lecturers. From textbook topics like Classical Mechanics, Quantum Mechanics, Electromagnetism, and Relativity to research-level topics like AdS/CFT, light-matter interaction, and new-age topics like Computational Physics and Quantum Computation, Ensemble has organized lectures on a wide range of topics.

Facing the COVID-induced lockdown era, the convenors created the first Ensemble website, with the motto ‘fighting the Maxwell demons as an ensemble of physics enthusiasts.’ The website was further developed and beautified by successive teams.

Ensemble has been taking part in Open Days for many years. Every year, we arrange stalls and demonstrate tabletop experiments to the public, primarily excited school students with curiosity-filled eyes and their parents. For example, we had nine stalls showcasing ideas such as the Meissner effect (levitation of superconductors cooled with liquid nitrogen on a magnet), non-Newtonian fluid, a muon detector, and simulations of chaos.

We organize two paper presentation events annually: a mock and a final. Students read papers and prepare presentations, highlighting their own understanding and research on the topic from a selected paper. In the mock presentation, students present to their peers, while in the final one, they present to a jury of professors from the Physics department. These help inculcate the habit of reading papers and conducting literature analysis, which are necessary to be a successful researcher.

Inspired by the International Physics Tournament (IPT), we started our own Ensemble Young Physicists’ Tournament (EYPT) earlier this year in 2026. Participants had to form a group of four to six people and work on one of the given problems. The problems were inspired by everyday phenomena like waves in falling fluid, a paper plane, or a rotating bottle. Eight teams took part in the event. The tournament culminated in a day-long Physics fight, where each team had to defend their solution while also critiquing and reviewing another designated team’s solution.

Ensemble also organizes a mock thesis presentation for the graduating students to practice before their final defence. We also hold a summer project expo, where senior undergraduates give presentations on their summer projects at prestigious institutions across India and abroad.

Through these activities, we have built a thriving undergraduate Physics community, helping each other navigate our academic and non-academic lives smoothly.
