Celebrating the Ordinary
Life isn’t made up of milestones alone. Sometimes, the smallest moments deserve a little confetti too.
Ever wondered what happens to all the moments that don’t come with decorations?
We often associate celebrations with major milestones in life — birthdays, graduations, festivals, and achievements. These are the moments when we gather, laugh, make memories, and let ourselves pause to enjoy our milestones. We always look forward to the bigger moments in life to celebrate and be happy. But what about those little moments that make up our everyday lives?
In our fast-paced lives, we are constantly looking ahead, preparing ourselves and planning moments ahead for our next big celebration. Somewhere along the way, we tend to overlook the smaller, joyous moments: maybe we finally completed a dreadful assignment, or got in touch with an old friend, or had some amazing food. These small moments add joy and meaning to our lives, yet we often dismiss them as insignificant to deserve a celebration. Celebration doesn’t necessarily have to involve throwing a party, decorating our homes, or gathering people. Sometimes, it is all about acknowledging the moment, taking out some time to be happy, and rewarding yourself.
When we start to celebrate beyond the extraordinary moments, we naturally begin to practice the habit of gratitude. Celebrations slow us down and remind us of all the things to be thankful for in our lives. Being grateful allows us to find contentment in what we have rather than chasing behind superficial wants. A small moment of happiness can remind us of the people, experiences, and simple comforts that make our lives meaningful.
Perhaps this is what allows us to see the world differently. We begin to realise that a moment’s worth need not be measured by society’s standards or by how impressive it appears to others. It all lies in how much it means to oneself.
After all, life is not only made up of milestones. It is also made up of small ordinary moments, and perhaps these moments deserve a little confetti too.
